FoxSnip vs CleanShot X: cross-platform, buy once

Same capture-and-annotate class. FoxSnip adds Windows, a buy-once Plus license, and local-first sharing — no CleanShot Cloud required.

CleanShot X is one of the best screenshot apps on the Mac. If you already live in that ecosystem and like CleanShot Cloud, stay. This page is for people who searched FoxSnip vs CleanShot X because they need Windows as well, a buy-once license, or a tool that does not upload by default.

Who it fitsTeams on mixed machines; buy-once buyersMac-only users who want the native CleanShot feel

Pick CleanShot X if every machine is a Mac and you want that specific app. Pick FoxSnip if someone on the team is on Windows, you do not want a cloud plan to share a PNG, or you want Plus as a buyout — not a guess about “is this a subscription?”

Cross-platform is the first fork

CleanShot X does not ship a Windows build. That is fine until a designer on macOS and an engineer on Windows need the same capture habit.

FoxSnip is the same product on both:

  • Region, window, and full screen
  • Annotate on the selection, then copy
  • Scrolling capture, pin, local OCR
  • Recording on the Plus track

Shortcuts and the “snip → mark → paste” path stay aligned. You are not teaching ShareX to one half of the team and CleanShot to the other.

Buy once vs Cloud

FoxSnip pricing is three sentences:

  1. Trial — 15 days, every Plus feature unlocked.
  2. Plus — one-time (internationally $12, ¥80 in China). Keep using it. No yearly update fee. This is not a subscription.
  3. Pro — optional. It only adds cloud translation, formula / table / chemical-symbol recognition, and share links. Capture, annotate, local OCR, and recording never move behind Pro.

CleanShot X sells a strong Mac app and a separate Cloud product for history and links. That split is clear if you read their site. It is less clear when a blog post just says “CleanShot.” If you do not want to rent a screenshot host, FoxSnip Plus is the whole local tool.

Privacy: the anti-Cloud sentence

FoxSnip does not upload screenshots unless you start a Pro cloud feature. Default is local. Offline works.

That is the difference against CleanShot Cloud and against “free” hosts that take the file the moment you hit share. If your shots include customer data, staging URLs, or a Slack sidebar you forgot to crop, keep them on the machine.

What CleanShot X still does better

Honesty matters or this page is ads.

  • Mac polish. CleanShot has years of native Mac detail FoxSnip is still catching up to.
  • Cloud library. If you want a hosted history, CleanShot Cloud is the product built for that. FoxSnip Pro share links are the optional equivalent, not a clone of their full Cloud suite.
  • Installed base. More Mac tutorials already assume CleanShot.

FoxSnip’s job is not to pretend those are false. It is to cover the cases CleanShot leaves open: Windows, a buy-once local license, and no upload unless you ask.

Workflow after install

Both apps should get you from first launch to a marked-up clipboard in a minute. On FoxSnip that path is:

  1. Capture with your shortcut (or take over the system screenshot keys in Settings).
  2. Annotate on the toolbar under the selection — arrow, text, redact.
  3. Copy. Paste into chat or a ticket.

Details live on the 60-second start page. If that first minute fails, comparison charts do not matter.

Price you can say out loud

Do not make a buyer reverse-engineer the bill.

  • FoxSnip trial is free for 15 days.
  • FoxSnip Plus is buy-once.
  • FoxSnip Pro is the only subscription-shaped SKU, and it is cloud-only.
  • Checkout is processed by Creem, an international merchant of record (not a China-mainland entity). You get an English invoice by email. Refunds are written in English on the Refunds & invoices page.

Check CleanShot’s current Mac + Cloud numbers on their site before you decide; they change.

Who should switch

Switch toward FoxSnip when:

  • You need Windows and Mac in one license family.
  • You want Plus as a buyout, not another yearly seat.
  • You refuse default uploads.
  • You still want pin, scrolling capture, and recording in the same app.

Stay on CleanShot X when the whole team is on Mac and you already like that editor.
