Shottr is a small, fast Mac screenshot utility: capture, OCR, scrolling shots, pin. People look up **FoxSnip vs Shottr** when that Mac-only box is the problem — they need **Windows**, **recording**, or a pin that sits in the same app as a real editor.

## Quick verdict

| | FoxSnip | Shottr |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Platforms | Windows + macOS | macOS only |
| License | 15-day trial, Plus buy-once | Inexpensive Mac utility |
| Pin | Always-on-top, with copy / drag | Fast Mac pin |
| Recording | On the Plus track | Not the product |
| Annotate | Inline toolbar + full editor | Lightweight markup |
| Windows | Yes | No |
| Who it fits | Mixed OS, stills *and* clips | Mac users who want a tiny overlay |

**Keep Shottr** if you only use a Mac and you love how little it weighs. **Use FoxSnip** if anyone needs Windows, you record as well as snip, or pin is part of a longer annotate → copy habit rather than a floating scrap.

## Windows: Shottr does not cross the aisle

Shottr is a Mac app. There is no Windows build to hand an engineer on a ThinkPad. That is the first hard filter.

FoxSnip ships both. The daily path is the same: shortcut, region, marks, copy. Pin exists on both sides. You are not running Shottr on the MacBook and a different utility on the PC.

## Recording: stills are not always enough

Shottr is a screenshot tool. When the bug only reproduces as motion — a hover, a race, a three-step wizard — you leave the app.

FoxSnip treats recording as part of Plus (rolling out with the rest of the capture license, not a new subscription). Still when a still works; record when it does not. One dock icon.

If your “screenshot app” search included demo clips, Shottr is the wrong category. FoxSnip is the category that kept recording on the buy-once side.

## Pin, then keep working

Both apps pin a capture on top of other windows. The difference is what happens next.

In FoxSnip, pin lives next to the same annotate tools, history, and copy/drag-to-folder behavior. You can mark the shot, pin the result, and keep it as a reference while you write the ticket. Shottr’s pin is excellent for “hold this pixel while I type.” It is less of a home for a longer markup session.

If pin is your main move *and* you later need arrows, redaction, or a scrolling stitch on Windows, FoxSnip is the single app.

## What Shottr still does better

- **Weight.** Shottr stays tiny. FoxSnip is a fuller editor and feels like it.
- **Mac-only speed.** If you never leave macOS, Shottr’s overlay can feel snappier for a grab-and-pin.
- **Price floor.** Shottr is cheap even by indie-Mac standards. FoxSnip Plus is still a buy-once, but it is a broader product.

Do not switch for “Mac overlay trivia.” Switch for OS coverage, recording, or a deeper annotate path.

## Local-first, same as the rest of FoxSnip

FoxSnip does not upload by default. Offline capture, pin, annotate, and copy work. Pro is only cloud translation, formula/table recognition, and share links.

Shottr is also local-first in spirit. The contrast here is not privacy theater — it is **platform + recording + editor depth**.

## Price you can say out loud

- FoxSnip: 15-day trial with all Plus features. Plus is one-time ($12 / ¥80), not a subscription. Pro is optional cloud.
- Payments via **Creem** (international merchant of record). English invoice. English [refunds](/snip/refunds).
- Shottr’s current Mac price is on their site.

## Who should switch

Move to FoxSnip when:

- You need **Windows** (or both).
- You need **screen recording** in the same license.
- Pin should sit beside a **full annotate / copy** flow.
- You want a 60-second first run: [screenshot → annotate → copy](/snip/start).

Stay on Shottr when you are Mac-only and you want the smallest pin-and-OCR utility.
